Toronto's Waterfront Revitalization Unearths Century-Old Ecosystem

Toronto’s waterfront revitalization has dramatically reshaped the city’s landscape while unearthing a hidden ecological past.

During the restoration of the Don River, ecologists discovered dormant seeds and aquatic life dating back over a century, revealing a snapshot of pre-industrial biodiversity.

Shelby Riskin, a University of Toronto expert, and her team uncovered live organisms from ancient soil samples, showcasing the remarkable resilience and survival of local ecosystems.

A centerpiece of the project, Ookwemin Minising, an island created by rerouting the Don River, further enabled the sprouting of native plants like cattails, once buried beneath urban development.

Melanie Sifton, a horticultural specialist, described moments of discovery as finding “buried treasure,” emphasizing new hope for urban ecological renewal.

This success highlights Toronto’s leadership in blending environmental restoration with city growth, proving nature’s strength even in urban environments.
