Farida Abu-Bakare and Tura Cousins Wilson Honored in 40 Under 40 Architectural Awards

Toronto Metropolitan University Alumni Recognized for Transformative Contributions to Architecture

Farida Abu-Bakare and Tura Cousins Wilson have been named to the inaugural 40 Under 40 list by the World Architecture Festival (WAF) and The Architect’s Newspaper, celebrating exceptional young architects across North America.

Both honorees are distinguished alumni of Toronto Metropolitan University’s Department of Architectural Science (DAS). Abu-Bakare earned her Master of Architecture in 2019, while Cousins Wilson completed his Bachelor of Architectural Science in 2009.

Since their graduation, Abu-Bakare and Cousins Wilson have significantly impacted the architectural landscape. Abu-Bakare, currently the Director of Global Practice at WXY architecture + urban design, has led projects emphasizing community engagement and sustainability. Cousins Wilson, co-founder of the Studio of Contemporary Architecture (SOCA), focuses on revitalizing existing structures and underserved communities.

Their commitment extends beyond design; both are dedicated mentors. Abu-Bakare recently participated in the Buone Nuove/Good News from MAXXI to Met Exhibition at DAS, highlighting women's achievements in architecture. Cousins Wilson, a part-time instructor at DAS, co-curated the Toronto Imagined exhibition, showcasing innovative urban designs.

Reflecting on their journeys, Abu-Bakare advises aspiring architects: “Focus on the work, and make mistakes. That is how you find your way. Every project will teach you something if you let it. Stay curious, stay open, and keep going. The work will meet you where you are, and that is where your impact begins.”

Cousins Wilson encourages students to be present and responsive to their surroundings: “My advice to a young architecture student is to be present and aware of the world around yourself and respond to it. Ignore the cultural clichés of the profession – architecture is in fact a diverse and expansive field in which many personality types, ambitions and skill sets can thrive. Take curiosity in something... anything, and invest yourself in it.”

The 40 Under 40 honorees will be showcased at WAF Miami later this month, providing a platform to share their innovative work with a global audience.
